Hallstatt Half Marathon 2026: Guide to the Hallstättersee Rundlauf

Runners gathering at the gas station start line for the Hallstatt Half Marathon.

The 37th International Sparkassen Hallstättersee Rundlauf is returning on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Having run this race in 2023 and 2024 (and missing 2025 due to injury), I can tell you that there is no other race in the world with this combination of Alpine beauty, community spirit, and a finish line as iconic as the Hallstatt Marktplatz.

1. Registration & Key Dates

Don’t wait until the last minute—this race is becoming incredibly popular worldwide. In 1987, only 187 athletes competed; today, we see nearly 1,400 runners from over 10 countries.

  • Race Date: April 26, 2026
  • Start Time: 09:45 AM (New time for 2026)
  • Registration: Online at TIME2WIN (official timing partner).
  • Deadline: April 24, 2026. Note: There is absolutely no late registration on race day!

2. The Course: 21km of Alpine Magic

The route is a almost loop around Lake Hallstatt. It consists of roughly 13km of paved tarmac and 8km of gravel forest trails.

  • The Start: Located next to the Gas Station in Hallstatt Lahn.
  • The Flow: You’ll pass through the P3/P4 parking areas, head into Obertraun (look for the cherry blossoms and “Golden Rain” flowers!), run past the Hallstatt train station, and hit the famous suspension bridge over the lake’s deepest point.
  • The Highlight: The Ostuferweg (East Shore Trail). Running between the azure water and the train tracks while the Dachstein glacier glows in the distance is why I keep coming back.
  • The Finish: The finish line is at the Marktplatz (Village Square). The atmosphere here is electric, with locals and tourists cheering you home.

The first 5km is a fast flat stretch on asphalt, passing the P3 and P4 parking lots along the southern shore. But then, the real race begins as you hit Obertraun.

  • The Scenery: This is why I keep coming back. By late April, the region is exploding with color—bright yellow “Golden Rain” (Forsythia), pink cherry blossoms (Sakura), and that impossibly fresh spring grass.

  • The East Shore (Ostuferweg): For me, this is the most breathtaking part. You’re running on a single trail right between the azure lake and the train tracks. You’ll likely see the local train passing by as you gaze across the water at Schneidkogel and the postcard view of Hallstatt itself. With the snow-capped Dachstein in the distance, it’s easy to forget your legs are tired.

Along the course, runners will be able to take in the scenic views of Lake Hallstatt. Additionally, there are rest stops with refreshments every 5 kilometers for competitors.

3. My Insider Tips

  • The “Ice Bath” Secret: After the race, I always head to Badeinsel. The water is freezing in April, but it’s the best “natural cryotherapy” for recovery.
  • Fueling: There are refreshment stations every 5km. If it’s a sunny day, the Obertraun stretch can get surprisingly warm—don’t skip the water stops.
  • Watch the Road: From km 14.3 to the finish, you are on a public road that is only partially closed. Stay alert!

4. Logistics: Parking, Chips, and Pasta

  • Parking: Hallstatt parking is famously difficult. Free parking is provided for race participants, but you must arrive early (before 8:30 AM) to secure a spot and follow the guidance system.
  • Bib Numbers & Pasta Party: Pick up your bib on Saturday (April 25) from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the elementary school (next to the fire brigade). Your registration includes a free portion of pasta and a drink! Sunday pickup starts at 7:30 AM.
  • Timing Chips: The race uses GREEN chips. If you don’t have a yellow ChampionChip, you can rent a GREEN chip for €4.00 at bib pickup. No chip = no time!

5. Post-Race: Ceremony & Raffle

The celebration at the Marktplatz runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Beyond the trophies for category winners, there is a legendary raffle. In the past, runners have won everything from new running shoes and skis to fine wine. Just keep your bib number handy!

To make your experience even more enjoyable, there are prepared some special treats for you:

  • A free pasta party and drink on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the elementary school next to the fire brigade depot. This is also where you can pick up your bib number and get ready for the race.
  • A professional massage service after the race in the same location. Relax your muscles and celebrate your achievement with our expert masseurs.
  • A photo gallery of the Hallstättersee Rundlauf to inspire you and show you what to expect. You can find it here: https://sport.foto-viertbauer.at

Pro Tip for 2026:

Since the Salt Mine is under renovation this spring, the town might feel a little different, but the race atmosphere is untouched. If you’re coming for the first time, stay in Obertraun for a bit more peace, but make sure you’re in Hallstatt for the post-race vibes.
