Hallstatt Taxi & Transport Guide 2026: Tips for Getting Around

Whether you need a reliable Hallstatt taxi for an airport transfer or the best way to catch the ferry after a long hike, here is the updated 2026 transportation map.
1. Hallstatt Taxi: Airport Transfers & Local Rides
If you are flying into Salzburg or Vienna, a private transfer is the gold standard for comfort. Having lugged ski gear and running equipment on the train, I can tell you: sometimes the taxi is worth every Euro.
- Salzburg Airport to Hallstatt: ~1 hour 15 minutes.
- Vienna Airport to Hallstatt: ~3 hours.
Recommended Local Service: For years, the go-to contact in town has been Mr. Ercan Acar. They offer 24/7 service, which is vital if your flight is delayed or you’re heading out for an early morning mountain trek.

2. The Iconic Hallstatt Water Taxi (The Ferry)
If you arrive by train, you’ll land at the Hallstatt Train Station on the opposite side of the lake. The Stefanie ferry is the only way across.
- The Experience: It’s timed perfectly with train arrivals. It is, in my opinion, the best €3.50 you’ll spend—the view of the village approaching from the water is world-class.
- 2026 Tip: Have cash (Euro) ready. While some digital payments are slowly appearing, cash is still king on the lake.
3. Regional Connections: Gosau, Obertraun, and Bad Goisern
As someone who loves the Hallstatt Alps, I often use Obertraun or Gosau as my base.
- To Gosau (20 mins): Perfect for reaching the Dachstein West ski area or the Gosauseen lakes. A taxi is about €40-50, while Bus 543 is a great budget alternative.
- To Obertraun (5-8 mins): I often stay here for the Krippenstein access. It’s a very short taxi ride, or a beautiful 1-hour walk along the lake if your legs aren’t tired!
- To Bad Goisern (15 mins): Known for its spas. Taking a taxi here is much faster than the train-plus-ferry combo.
4. Public Bus Routes (Postbus)
The bus network is excellent for day trips.
- Bus 542/543: This is the lifeline between Hallstatt, the Gosaumühle intersection, and Gosau.
- Pro Tip: Download the ÖBB Scotty app. It is the most accurate way to check real-time bus and train schedules in the mountains.
5. Arriving by Car: The 2026 Parking Reality
In 2026, Hallstatt is stricter than ever about vehicle access. The village center is car-free.
- P1 & P2: These are your primary options. P2 is closer to the Salt Mine and the Hallstatt Half Marathon start area.
- Shuttle Service: If you stay at a hotel inside the village, a special shuttle will pick you up from P1.

Why Trust This Guide?
I don’t just write about these roads; I’ve traveled them in snow, rain, and the heat of race day. I’ve missed the last ferry (don’t do that!) and I’ve called a taxi from the foot of the Sarstein in Obertraun when my legs gave out. This guide is built on those real-world mistakes so you don’t have to make them.
Essential Official Links for Travelers
When planning your journey through the Hallstatt Alps, these are the three most reliable external resources I use to double-check schedules and prices:
- ÖBB Scotty (National Transit Planner): The definitive app for train, bus, and ferry connections across all of Austria.
- OÖVV (Regional Bus Authority): Use this to find specific zone pricing and route maps for the Postbus 542 and 543.
- Salzburg Airport (Official Site): Useful for checking real-time flight arrivals if you are coordinating a pickup with a driver.
