My August Visit to Waldbachstrub Waterfall
Our August trip to Hallstatt was part of a longer stay in the Austrian Alps. We were based at the peaceful Camping Temel in Altaussee—a quiet spot surrounded by mountains.

Earlier that week, we had already conquered the Hoher Sarstein, and after an easier rest day in Tauplitz, Thursday was planned for something a bit more challenging: a full hiking loop from Hallstatt.

We arrived early in the morning to secure a parking spot at P2 Parking Lot. There was already a line for the Salzbergbahn funicular, but we weren’t planning to use it this time. Instead, we set off on foot into the Echerntal Valley, following the river upstream.

Our first stop was the Glacier Garden, where Ice Age rock formations give a fascinating glimpse into the valley’s ancient past. From there, we continued to both viewpoints of the Waldbachstrub Waterfall, taking in the thunderous beauty of its converging cascades.

The hike didn’t end there. We pushed on toward Schneidkogel, where sweeping views opened over Lake Hallstatt and the village far below. The descent led us past the Hallstatt Salt Mine, then down to the Rudolfsturm for a well-earned drink.

We couldn’t resist a couple of photos at the Skywalk before continuing the descent into Hallstatt via the Bone House and Marktplatz.
The perfect finale? A relaxing stroll along the lake to Badeinsel, where I jumped straight into the cool, clear water for a swim. After six to seven hours of hiking, it was the most refreshing ending imaginable before heading back to the car.

About Waldbachstrub waterfall
The upper viewpoint at Waldbachstrub offers a spectacular sight: three powerful waterfalls converging in one dramatic location. These falls are considered among the most beautiful waterfalls in Austria. On the left, you’ll see the Waldbachstrub Waterfall, in the center is the Lauterbach Waterfall, and on the right flows an unofficially named cascade often referred to as The Klausalm Waterfall.
What makes this spot truly special is the raw energy of nature, as all three waterfalls crash into the same rocky basin, creating a breathtaking scene. Don’t miss the lower viewpoint either—it gives you a close-up of the Waldbachstrub waterfall and a partial view of the others, making it worth the short detour.
