Free Parking Hallstatt – Best Options Near the Village

Is there free parking in Hallstatt? Unfortunately, NOthere is no free parking directly in or around the village. All official lots in Hallstatt require payment. However, you can still save money by using free parking options in nearby villages like Obertraun and Bad Goisern. This guide will walk you through the best alternatives, where to leave your car safely, and how to get into Hallstatt without a hassle.

Option 1: Park in Obertraun for Free and Walk or Shuttle

One of the most reliable ways to park for free is to leave your vehicle in Obertraun, the neighboring village just 4 km from Hallstatt.

  • 🅿️ Look for free public spots near Obertraun train station
  • 🚶 Walk to Hallstatt via scenic lakeside path (approx. 45–60 minutes)
  • 🚐 Or take the local bus or train to Hallstatt station + ferry combo

While this adds some travel time, it saves you the hassle and cost of paid lots in Hallstatt itself.

🚢 Option 2: Park in Steeg and Take the Ferry to Hallstatt

Another clever way to avoid Hallstatt’s crowded paid lots is to park at the edge of Steeg village, just before you reach Hallstatt. There’s a small, informal parking area near the lakeshore here:

From there, you can take the ferry across Lake Hallstatt, which offers a scenic and relaxing way to arrive. The ferry drops you right at the historic village center—just a short walk from major sights like the Market Square and Salt Mine funicular.

✅ Ideal if you’re coming early in the day or during low season
✅ Great for travelers who want a peaceful approach with lake views
⛔ Be aware that parking spots here are very limited and unmarked—arrive early

Option 3: Ask Your Guesthouse or Hotel

If you’re staying overnight in Hallstatt, some hotels or guesthouses offer free or discounted parking. Some include a free hotel parking ticket for the P1 or P2 lot, while others provide voucher codes that reduce your parking costs. Either way, it’s best to contact your accommodation in advance and ask:

  • ✅ Is parking included in my booking?
  • ✅ Where is the nearest guest parking spot?
  • ✅ Do I need a permit or code?

These details can save you time, money, and stress—especially during peak season when parking fills up quickly.

🚐 How to Use the P1 Hotel Shuttle Service

If your hotel uses the P1 parking area, follow the signs as you approach Hallstatt and take a ticket at the entrance. Head to the information point or speak to the shuttle driver at the stop near the machines. The free hotel shuttle runs every 30 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., taking you and your luggage directly to your accommodation. If no shuttle is on site, you can call one at +43 664 1530625.

Before your first shuttle ride, make sure to convert your parking ticket into a hotel ticket at the machine: insert the ticket, press “Hotel Ticket,” choose your stay length, and pay. This gives you in/out access to P1 during your visit. Without the hotel ticket, you’ll be charged the more expensive short-term parking rates. When it’s time to leave, request the return shuttle either via phone or through your hotel. Bonus: P1 also has two charging stations for electric vehicles.

Some hotels and private guesthouses offer free parking included with your stay. Others provide discounted vouchers for the official P1 or P2 lots.

✅ Always contact your accommodation beforehand and ask:

  • Is parking included in my booking?
  • Where is the nearest guest parking spot?
  • Do I need a permit or code?
